Seven of the Biggest Dogs Ever
Seven of the Biggest Dogs Ever
At Jazz’s Wonderland, we love dogs of all sizes. From Yorkie babies to large Labs, we enjoy snuggling and playing with about any breed. But, some breeds just can’t help but get special attention for their size. You take notice the first time you see an Akita or a Great Dane.
While large dogs are not always popular as house pets because of the space, they take up and the exercise they require, many can be loyal and enjoyable family dogs. Below are some of the largest and most rare dog breeds you may consider if you want a sizeable and intimidating dog.
Bernese Mountain Dog
Bernese mountain dogs are known for their tri-colored coat and lovable disposition. Bred for cold-weather working, they are incredibly fluffy and incredibly strong. These dogs are easy to train and make great family pets if you can give them the space to run and exercise.
Great Dane
Great Danes are often teased for being “horses” because of their giant size and long, lanky legs. They were first bred to guard livestock and hunt wild boars but are now known as lovable house pets. Proper training and socialization are necessary if you want a good relationship with this very loyal and active breed.
Bullmastiff
Bullmastiffs are known for their intimidating presence but are loving, and well-tempered dispositioned when trained well. Also known as the “Gamekeeper’s Night Dog,” This breed was designed to be a great watchdog for large land areas. Because of this, they can be territorial, but with the right socialization can be very friendly and kind.
Cane Corso
Cane Corsos are similar to Bullmastiffs in their intimidating presence and protective nature toward their family. These are often chosen as guard dogs for farms and rural areas because they are strong and protective, but when socialized as puppies, they are very sweet and lovable.
Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees are most known for their majestic white coat, making them look much larger than they actually are. These dogs were bred for herding and will fiercely protect livestock or anything important to them. This can make them territorial toward their owners and loyal and loving to their families.
Kangal Shepherd Dog
Kangals are not common in the U.S. but are one of the more popular large breeds in Turkey and other parts of Eastern Europe. They have been used in African countries to scare off big cats in farmlands and are known for their bravery and loyalty toward owners. This dog is one of the largest on our list, with an average weight of over 100 pounds.
Caucasian Ovcharka
The Caucasian Ovcharka (Or Caucasian Shepherd) is one of the world's largest and most intimidating breeds. First bred in Siberia for hunting bears and guarding livestock, they were popularized as a Soviet prison guard dog in the 1920s. They are still used as prison guard dogs in Russia today and can be seriously intimidating. Caucasian Ovcharkas in the U.S. are often used as guard dogs on farms to protect against bears, wolves, and other predators in the wild.
