Tips: Getting Best Dog Haircuts

Summertime can be one of the best seasons for you and your dog to spend time together. The water is warm, the sun is shining, and endless outdoor activities are dog-friendly for you both to enjoy. However, your pup won’t have a good time if they become overheated after only a few minutes in the sun. One of the best ways to avoid this is by giving them a haircut that suits their summer needs.

Different breeds have different haircut styles that suit their look and comfort best.

However, there are a few tips you can follow, regardless of the breed, that can help keep your furry friend cool all summer long:

Trims Around the Face

If your dog normally goes in for haircuts, ask to have a little extra taken off around the face in the summertime. This can make it easier for them to see and breathe, especially while playing outside. For small breeds, a “teddy bear” haircut can be perfect for summer, giving them a shorter but adorable cut.

Summer brushing

If your dog is a shedder, invest in a summer de-shedding treatment for them. This will lighten the load and help them stay cool while playing outside. Most dogs will shed excessively in the summer, which can also help keep dog hair in the house to a minimum.

Beware of Shaving

While you may think that shaving your dog will help keep them cool in the summertime, there are certain breeds where this can be dangerous. Breeds with double coats – such as the husky, Akita, chow chow, and pomeranian – should never be shaved despite their thick coats. This can cause them to develop clipper alopecia, a condition where the hair is damaged and cannot grow back the same. Your double-coated dog will struggle to grow back its coat and experience hair loss, trouble regulating temperature, and sunburn.

Talk to your vet and groomer before changing your dog’s hairstyle this summer to ensure they will be happy and comfortable with a new ‘do. And, if you’re looking for more inspiration for your favorite breed, visit our Instagram to find dogs in your area with your favorite haircuts!
