Fall Safety Tips for Dogs
Fall Safety Tips for Dogs
Autumn is a favorite season among Floridians for many reasons. The tourist season is dying down which means the roads and beaches are less busy. The weather is also cooling off and our A/C bills will drop soon. Fall is a wonderful time for your dog, as well! They can enjoy the cool weather and spend more time outdoors, so long as both of you are prepared for the change of seasons.
Below are a few tips to ensure your dog is both cozy and safe this fall season:
Watch out for ticks
During the fall, you may be hiking and camping with your dog more often, which can lead to tick bites if you don’t have the right protection. We often think of summer as the most dangerous time for dogs as the mosquitoes are out, but fall and winter can also expose them to pests. Talk to your vet about the best flea and tick prevention for your animals year-round.
Keep an eye on what your dog eats
In autumn, the trees will be shedding leaves and nuts on the ground, some of which can be dangerous to your dog. Black walnuts are poisonous to dogs, and acorns can cause bowel obstructions for smaller breeds. If you take your dog on extended outdoor adventures, be watchful for what they’re eating off the ground.
Dress them properly for activities
If you plan to do some hiking or camping this year, you may want to invest in dog hiking boots to ensure your dog doesn’t injure their paws during more difficult parts of your hike. These will take some getting used to, so try them on at home prior to your trip so your dog can get used to walking in them. They are also a versatile summer option for taking your dogs on sidewalks without burning their feet. For smaller or short-haired dogs, investing in a nice jacket can also help them enjoy the outdoors more.
Autumn is one of the best seasons to spend time with your dog outside and it's important to be careful and attentive to their needs. For more tips on how to keep your dog safe and happy this season, visit our blog!
